Local family’s home ransacked

Columbus police are warning families to be careful what they post on social media and how they dispose of boxes from Christmas presents after a local family left town over the holiday and returned to find their home ransacked.

Nora Murr told police that jewelry, perfume and baby items for their newborn were taken in the incident, which occurred after the family opened presents early because they were traveling to Illinois on Christmas. The family had someone to watch the house, but did tell police they had posted plans for their trip on social media.

“It’s like they either knew that we were leaving or saw that we were leaving,” Nora Murr said.

Columbus police remind homeowners not to leave boxes from Christmas presents outdoors because thieves can determine what items are in your home. They also remind homeowners that revealing your travel plans on social media can lead thieves to your home in this prime season for burglaries.
