ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A spokeswoman for the Anchorage School District says an elementary school damaged by a suspicious fire will be ready for children when school resumes next week.
Catherine Essary tells Anchorage television station KTUU that most of the damage was confined to one classroom at College Gate Elementary.
She also says an initial estimate of several hundred thousand dollars damage may have been high.
Anchorage firefighters early Sunday took a call that flames were shooting out of the school west of Alaska Pacific University.
The school’s sprinkler system turned on and contained damage but fire, smoke and water destroyed items inside the fourth-grade classroom.
Teacher Heather Helgeson says damage included students’ work, gym shoes and snow boots, several hundred books, 10 years of teaching supplies and a set of electronic tablets.
