North grad performs with ‘Bama band in title game

Evan Watkins, a 2015 Columbus North High School graduate, performed with the University of Alabama’s marching band Monday during the College Football Playoff national championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Alabama defeated Georgia 26-23 in overtime to win the school’s fifth national title in the past decade.

It represented the third consecutive year that Watkins, a junior, marched with the band, also known as the “Million Dollar Band,” in the national championship game. Watkins, who was a four-year member of the Sound of North in high school, plays tenor saxophone.

The band marched into formations that spelled “BAMA” and a script “A” and also the image of an elephant — the university of Alabama’s mascot. Among the songs the band played were “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “Sounds of Silence.”

Watkins is the son of Scott and Anita Watkins of Columbus.
