City OKs attorney on retainer for clerk-treasurer

Columbus has approved a contract for an attorney for the city’s clerk-treasurer’s office.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a contract with Peter King, a lawyer with Columbus law firm Cline, King & King, for an annual $5,000 fee. King will provide legal guidance to Clerk-Treasurer Luann Welmer if questions arise about policies within the office.

Welmer said clerk-treasurers are permitted under state law to hire their own attorneys to help interpret any Indiana code changes affecting her office. King, who served as city attorney under former Mayor Robert Stewart, has been retained by Welmer for the past six years.
