COLUMBUS
Michael W. Owens, 69, of Columbus, died at 7:26 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Willow Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center-Columbus.
Mike was born September 20, 1948, in Indianapolis, the son of William L. and Florence L. Keith Owens.
On February 22, 1969, he married Jeanne Hoffman.
Mr. Owens worked for the United States Postal Service for 28 years as a mail clerk. He retired in 2011.
Mike loved camping and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, playing euchre and dice.
Mr. Owens was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war and a Bronze Star recipient. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 24.
Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who was very family oriented.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jeanne; son, Christopher (Jessica) Owens of Daytona Beach, Florida; grandchild, Harper Owens; sister, Sheila (Michael) Peelman of Noblesville, brothers, Dennis (Sandy) Owens of Pickerington, Ohio, Tom Eckstein of Oaklandon, Indiana; sisters-in-law, Debbie Irwin of Brownsburg, Kimberley (Lynn) Schubert of Mooresville, and brother-in-law, Mel (Wanda) Hoffman of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Gary Irwin; and nephew, Jeffrey Brian Smith.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with David Mossbarger officiating. Family and friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Following the family’s wishes, cremation will take place after the funeral service.
