A community observance honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was conducted at Columbus East High School auditorium.

Fire broke out in a cooling tower being dismantled with a cutting torch on the east side of the main Fifth Street Cummins Engine plant, but it was quickly brought under control by city firemen.
