PENDLETON, Ore. — Authorities in eastern Oregon say a burglary suspect stole a patrol car after his arrest.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Christopher Phillips crashed the vehicle into a ditch near Hermiston and was on the run for a few hours before his recapture Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. Josh Roberts told the East Oregonian that Phillips was placed in the back of a patrol car after his initial arrest at a vacant house in Hermiston. It’s believed he slipped his handcuffs, broke out the back window and got into the driver’s seat.
