BRYAN, Texas — Police say a man shot and killed his wife and another man at a Central Texas apartment before turning his gun on himself.

The bodies of Melvin Nathan Benefield, wife Virginia Ann Benefield and neighbor Larry Darnell Davis were found at the Benefield’s Bryan apartment Wednesday. Bryan police officials said in a Thursday social media posting that a preliminary autopsy showed that Melvin Benefield shot and killed his wife and Davis before killing himself.

Earlier, police revealed that Melvin Benefield had a protective order against his wife. Court records show Virginia Benefield was arrested Nov. 19 on an assault family violence charge against her husband, who then obtained a court order to keep her away from him. She was arrested Dec. 31 for public intoxication and for violating the order by being at the Bryan complex.

She was released from jail Saturday.
