BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Bennington Select Board will vote on a budget next week that includes $150,000 in funding for the Bennington Rescue Squad.

Board members voted Saturday to include the amount for the nonprofit ambulance service as a budget line item — the first time they’ve done so. The Bennington Banner reports member had considerable discussion over the Rescue Squad’s endowment, which has grown to about $3 million.

Rescue Squad officials stressed the organization continues to operate at a loss and dipping into the endowment would not be sustainable for funding. The organization previously petitioned for approximately $207,000 in funding.

Board Vice Chair Donald Campbell says the line item meets the organization halfway.

Select Board members are expected to formally approve the fiscal 2019 municipal budget next Monday night.
