COLUMBUS
Clifford “Wayne” Coy, age 97, of Columbus and Madison, entered this life on June 26, 1920. He was born at home in Kansas, Indiana (now known as Camp Atterbury). He was the loving son of Aubrey Delorse and Mildred Fay Miller Coy.
Wayne’s family was the first family to move from Kansas when the area became U.S. government property.
He was a 1938 graduate of Edinburgh High School and went on to Purdue University to become an agricultural teacher, earning his bachelor’s degree. He later earned his master’s degree from Indiana University.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 30, 1943 at Fort Benjamin Harrison during World War II. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant and served in the American Theater. He was honorably discharged on December 17, 1945 from Camp Atterbury, and received the Good Conduct Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was united in marriage to Catherine June McCrisaken on January 15, 1945, and this happy union of 28 years was blessed with a son, Richard and a daughter, Audrey.
Wayne began his teaching career at Milroy High School and taught for one year before starting his 36-year career with Columbus North and East high schools as an agricultural teacher. He loved working with the students and watching their progress. He served as the FFA sponsor for many years with the school system.
He always said “The main thing anyway is to get them to further their education.”
Wayne was well-liked by his many students throughout his 37 years of teaching. Many former students continued to keep in contact with and visit Wayne many years after their graduation, even up to the time of his death.
After the death of June, he was united in marriage to Jane Wray Forrest on June 28, 1989 in Columbus.
He had served on the draft board, the parks and recreation board, the 4-H board, and the election board.
He was also involved with the Kiwanis Club in Columbus. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus and enjoyed golf, gardening, farming, woodworking, and sports.
Wayne died on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 9 a.m. at River Terrace Health Campus in downtown Madison.

Wayne will be missed by his loving wife of 28 years, Jane Wray Coy of Madison; his son, Richard Coy (Hortensia) of La Habra Heights, California; his daughter, Audrey Boss of Columbus; his grandchildren, Christie Coy Mitchell-Yellin (Benjamin) of Huntsville, Texas, Kelly Jo Boss of Crothersville; his stepdaughter, Robin Singer (Jim) of Madison, stepson, Michael Forrest (Susan) of Brentwood, California; his great-grandchildren, Eli James Boss-Trowbridge, Simon, Miles and Lucienne Mitchell-Yellin; his step-grandchildren, Sarah Collins (Jason) of Fishers, Meredith Kiley (Michael) of San Bruno, California, Kathryn Singer of Fishers, Lauren LeGrand (Brian) of Madison; his step great-grandchildren, Emma Collins, Addison Collins and Logan Kiley; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Aubrey Delorse Coy, died October 13, 1965, his mother, Mildred Faye Miller Coy, died September 15, 1974, his first wife of 28 years, Catherine June McCrisaken Coy, who died June 24, 1973, his sister, Louise Alberta Angle who died January 7, 2013, his brothers, Donald Coy who died May 14, 1989 and Lloyd Delorse Coy who died November 15, 2013.
FUNERAL CEREMONY
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 11:30 a.m., by Pastor Doug Bauman at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 East State Street in Columbus. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Columbus.
VISITATION
Friends may visit on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus.
FULL MILITARY HONORS
Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Fort Knox Ceremonial Unit. MEMORIAL EXPRESSIONS Memorial contributions may be made to the FFA or the Donor’s Choice. Cards are available at the funeral home and the church.
