HERRIMAN, Utah — Unified Police in the southwestern fringe of the Salt Lake City metro area are searching for a suspect who shot a driver, stole his car and exchanged gunfire with an officer Saturday.

Residents in the search area in Herriman and Riverton are being asked to lock their doors, remain indoors and report suspicious activity to police.

Police say the wounded driver is hospitalized in serious condition but that the suspect and the officer weren’t hit in their exchange of gunfire.

The only description of suspect is that he has facial hair and was wearing dark clothing.

Police say the stolen car was found crashed near Blackridge Reservoir.

The search area extends from the Mountain View Corridor to Rose Crest Road and Blackridge Reservoir and 13400 South.
