SALT LAKE CITY — State health officials say the number of hospitalizations in Utah due to the flu has more than doubled in less than three weeks.

KSL-TV reports that more 850 people were hospitalized in Utah because of the flu as of Monday.

The Utah Department of Health says more than 400 state residents were hospitalized less than three weeks ago.

Department flu surveillance epidemiologist Gregg Reed says the state expects the flu rate to continue for a number of weeks. He says severe illness will continue even as the season starts to slow down.

Officials say it’s still not too late to get a flu shot.

Reed says the shot not only helps the individual, but it also helps a community by reducing the spread.
