PHILADELPHIA — Police say a man has been arrested in the stabbing and beating death of his mother in the Philadelphia apartment they shared.

Homicide Capt. John Ryan says officers were sent to the East Falls unit Wednesday to check on the welfare of the woman because family members hadn’t seen or heard from her for several days.

Ryan says they found the 49-year-old woman dead of stab wounds and blunt force trauma. The 27-year-old son was arrested and faces murder and related charges.

Police said the suspect was being treated for mental health issues and was “possibly off his medication.” He said mother and son had argued over issues related to him taking his medication.
