LEAGUE CITY, Texas — Police say an officer responding to a reported attempted carjacking and robbery in Southeast Texas fatally shot a suspect during a struggle.

League City police didn’t immediately release the name of the man who died late Tuesday or further details on the officer. Police say a woman was slightly hurt when the suspect hit her with a pipe while trying to steal her car.

League City police spokeswoman Kelly Williamson says a driver pulled up to a drug store and was approached by a man who demanded her keys. Williamson says the woman refused, the suspect struck her and ran.

An officer located the suspect and police say the pair fought. The officer opened fire. The suspect died at the scene.

League City is 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Houston.
