BARTOW, Fla. — Police in Florida say a 12-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand while moving a handgun left unsecured inside his uncle’s vehicle.

Bartow police said in a news release that the shooting happened Thursday evening when 23-year-old Michael Caraway asked the boy to go outside and get his phone charger from his vehicle. The boy saw the handgun, picked it up and it discharged.

The child was taken St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa, where he was listed in stable condition.

Detectives learned that Caraway took the handgun and threw it into a phosphate pit before deputies arrived at the home.

Caraway was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and failure to secure a firearm. A lawyer isn’t listed on the report.
