ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say an elderly man has died in a mobile home fire in North Carolina.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports the Skyland Fire Department received a report Wednesday night of a fire at a mobile home in a retirement community.

Skyland Fire Chief Ryan Cole said within 10 minutes, firefighters removed the man’s body. He said the man was burned but it wasn’t clear whether he sustained the burns before or after he died.

Firefighters aren’t sure what caused the fire, but Cole said that it wasn’t suspicious and was likely a “kitchen or cooking fire.” He said the home wasn’t equipped with smoke detectors, which may have helped alter neighbors sooner.

The man hasn’t been identified because his family hasn’t been notified.
