SALT LAKE CITY — Utah state lawmakers are raising concerns about an increase in the anticipated cost of a new state prison.
The Deseret News reports that state prison relocation officials said Wednesday that the new cost estimate is $692.5 million. That’s up from a previous estimate of $650 million.
Rep. Marie Poulson, a Democrat from Salt Lake City, raised concerns and said she doesn’t want the project to become a “bottomless pit of funds.”
Tani Downing, the executive director of the Utah Department of Administrative Services, says they’ve been working with contractors to keep costs as low as possible.
The first part of the prison, being built about 25 miles north near the Salt Lake City International Airport, is scheduled to be done by the summer of 2020.
