Autopsy confirms accidental hunting death of hunter

HOLTON — An autopsy has confirmed that a Columbus man died from an accidental gunshot wound last weekend while hunting in Ripley County, authorities say.

Anthony Thompson, 29, was hunting Saturday morning in a ground blind in Holton with his brother and a boy, said Travis Stewart, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division conservation officer.

The autopsy was conducted Sunday in Ripley County. Toxicology results still are pending, but foul play is not suspected, Stewart said.

Ripley County Emergency Medical Service provided medical assistance to Thompson, who initially was reported to have life-threatening injuries. About three hours later, the Ripley County Coroner pronounced Thompson dead, he said.

The names of the other two people in the hunting party were not released, he said.
