PROVO, Utah — A Utah County sheriff’s deputy who is recovering from injuries after crashing his patrol vehicle into a fleeing suspect’s truck says he decided he was going to end the chase any way he could.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports that Justin Mortensen told reporters following his release from a hospital on Thursday that he was aware that Justin Llewelyn was accused of shooting a homeowner in Herriman and exchanging gunfire with police while escaping last weekend.

The 33-year-old Llewelyn was being held at the Salt Lake County jail after treatment for injuries following the Wednesday afternoon crash in Spanish Fork.

Mortensen says he maneuvered his vehicle to crash into Mortensen’s truck on the driver’s side to end the chase that started on Interstate 15 near Provo.

Police previously arrested two people on suspicion of obstructing justice in the case.
