NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — A memorial service for a transgender woman found slain in her home is planned for this weekend.

The service for Christa Leigh Steele-Knudslien is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence.

The 42-year-old Steele-Knudslien was found beaten and stabbed to death in her North Adams home on Jan. 4. Her husband of less than a year has been charged with murder in her death.

She was known as passionate transgender rights advocate who started a pageant for transgender women in New England.

The Rev. Yohah Ralph of the United Church of Christ minister is officiating at the memorial service.

Ralph tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette that Steele-Knudslien was a positive person who seemed happy in her new life and home.
