INDIANAPOLIS — A former Mike Pence gubernatorial aide is running for an open congressional seat that spans swaths central and northwestern Indiana.

Republican Diego Morales is running for the 4th District seat that current GOP Rep. Todd Rokita is giving up to run for Senate. Morales filed state paperwork Monday to run for Congress.

Morales bills himself as a “pro-life Christian conservative.” He has drawn several influential backers, including Bob Grand, a major GOP fundraiser who is close to Pence. He was endorsed publicly on Monday by Jeff Cardwell, who was the Indiana Republican Party chairman when Pence was governor.

Morales campaign reports he raised $204,000 during the last three months of 2017.

Other Republican candidates include former state Rep. Steve Braun of Zionsville and state Rep. Jim Baird of Greencastle.
