JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Authorities say an 11-year-old boy was shot and seriously injured when a handgun accidentally discharged while two teenagers were playing with the weapon in an apartment.

The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon in Jersey City. But authorities haven’t said how the teens got the gun, who owns the weapon or what caused it to discharge.

A 15-year-old boy is charged with reckless aggravated assault and a weapons offense, while a 14-year-old boy faces obstruction and tampering with evidence charges.

The wounded boy remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition. His name and the names of the two teens were not released.

Authorities say adults were in the apartment when the shooting occurred. But they’re not expected to face any charges.
