NEW YORK — New York Rep. Peter King says the American people have a right to know about the evidence of abuses of power committed by a small number of top officials.

The Republican congressman is on the House Intelligence Committee which voted Monday to release a classified memo that alleges the FBI and the Justice Department improperly used government surveillance.

The memo addresses a dossier of allegations against Republican President Donald Trump compiled by a former British spy, and questions over whether it was unlawfully used to obtain surveillance warrants.

King says no information in the memo will jeopardize national security. He says he wants to make clear that 99.9 percent of the brave men and women at the FBI do an outstanding job.

Trump has five days to authorize its release.
