NEW DELHI — Indian ride-hailing service Ola said Tuesday that it’s planning to enter the Australian market, its first foray overseas.

The company said it has begun inviting car owners in the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to learn more about driving for the service. It plans to start commercial operations in Australia in early 2018.

The Indian app-based ride-hailing company will be in competition with Uber in the Australian market.

Ola, based in India’s southern technology hub of Bangalore, was set up in 2011 and along with Uber has become hugely popular as more people have access to smartphones.

The service says it has nearly a million drivers across India and 125 million people use it.
