CORTLAND

Mary Evelyn Mellencamp, 90, of the Cortland area, died Wednesday night, Jan. 31, 2018, at Schneck Medical Center with family and her pastor at her side

She was a homemaker, farm operator and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was a Christian and a long-time member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Seymour, where she served in many capacities as a volunteer and servant of the Lord.

Mary Evelyn was born May 28, 1927, in Bartholomew County, the daughter of Frank Frederick and Alma Martha Clare (Mensendiek) Runge.

She graduated from Columbus High School in 1945.

She worked for a while at Irwin-Union Trust Co. at its downtown Columbus office.

She enjoyed the occasional Inter-Urban ride from Columbus to downtown Indianapolis to shop with co-workers from the bank.

On April 5, 1953, she married Francis Eugene Mellencamp at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Clifty. They lived briefly in Williamsburg, Virginia, while Francis served with the U.S. Army before their return to farm life in the Cortland area.

She is survived by two sons, David Kim (Kim) Mellencamp of Cortland and Dale Robert (Laura) Mellencamp of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Karen Jane (Danny) Mellencamp Davis of Seymour; six grandchildren, William David (Dawn) Mellencamp of Dover, New Hampshire, Thomas Jason (Angela) Mellencamp of Seymour, Mary Elise Mellencamp of Houston, Texas, Abby Bryn Mellencamp of Houston, Texas, Hannah Grace Davis of Seymour and Sarah Rose Davis of Seymour; six great-grandchildren, Aidan Mellencamp, Zachary Cook and Oscar Mellencamp, all of Dover, New Hampshire, and Lane Mellencamp, Turner Mellencamp and Kyla Mellencamp, all of Seymour; and a brother, John Robert (Marilyn) Runge of Columbus. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Mellencamp; and a brother, Frank Marian Runge.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Pastor Andrew Currao will conduct the funeral service at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. Pastor Joseph Barlau will conduct a graveside service at 10 a.m. Monday at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour.

Mary Evelyn taught many young children from throughout the community during more than 20 years as a Sunday school teacher at Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she also served with the LWML for many years including a time as its local chapter president.

She also was an active member of AAL. She served as a greeter and greeter manager for many years at her church. She also made countless thousands of stitches as a member of the Redeemer quilting group, sewing quilts for those in need across the country and around the world.

She also served youth as a Pet and Hobby Leader and was a member of Hamilton Township Farm Bureau.

She had a kind and caring heart.
