SPARKS, Nev. — Authorities investigating an officer-involved shooting in northern Nevada say the suspect armed with a handgun fired a shot at a Sparks police officer before he was killed.

Reno Police Sgt. KC Myers said Friday a preliminary investigation of the Jan. 24 shooting shows 27-year-old Humberto Vera-Munoz fled at a high rate of speed when Sparks officers attempted to pull him over south of Sparks High School.

Myers says he later started weaving through an apartment complex parking lot before he eventually stopped abruptly. He says Vera-Munoz initially ignored the offers commands to exit his vehicle, but then emerged with a handgun and shot at one of the officers.

The officers returned fire and Vera-Munoz went down near his vehicle where he was pronounced dead.

Both officers have been placed on routine administrative leave pending conclusion of the investigation.
