North Christian earns magazine distinction

Architectural Digest went in search of the most beautiful places of worship in all 50 states, and picked a futuristic-looking one designed by one of Finland’s greatest architects as No. 1 in Indiana.

It’s North Christian Church, located at 850 Tipton Lane in Columbus, which was completed in 1964.

Architect Eero Saarinen (1910-61) was more widely known for his industrial designs than places of worship, Architectural Digest writes, which “makes North Christian Church so intriguing.”

North Christian was the last building designed by Saarinen before his death.

Among his other noted projects: the Gateway Arch in St. Louis; the General Motors Technical Center near Detroit; the TWA Terminal in New York City and Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C.

North Christian Church was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. A year later, it became one of six National Historic Landmarks in Columbus — with a seventh added in 2012.
