Teen accused of shooting sister in eye

NORTH VERNON — A 15-year-old has been detained after being accused of shooting his sister in the eye with a BB gun.

North Vernon Police officers were sent to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital at 10:34 p.m. Friday after a 10-year-old girl arrived in the emergency room with a BB gun injury to her left eye.

Police said officers interviewed the victim and other members of the family and learned the victim’s 15-year-old brother shot his sister in the eye.

The 15-year-old suspect told officers that his younger sister had been bugging him, police said. He intended on scaring her by firing a BB into the wall, however when he shot in her direction, he struck her in the face, police said.

Officers contacted a juvenile probation officer who recommended the 15-year-old be detained on preliminary charges of battery with serious bodily injury, a level 4 felony, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a level 3 felony and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a level 6 felony, police said.

The 15-year-old suspect was transported to the Jackson County Juvenile detection facility.

The 15 year-old suspect is currently on probation for felony intimidation, police said.
