North swimmers receive call-backs for finals

Columbus North landed a pair of call-backs Sunday for this weekend’s Girls Swimming State Finals.

Sophomore Betsy King was added to the field in the 100-yard freestyle; and King, sophomore Erica Samuel, senior Kaitlyn Niebrugge and sophomore Olivia Morlok were added in the 400 freestyle relay. Both finished second in their events in Saturday’s North Sectional.

Only the event winners and others meeting the state-cut times automatically qualify for state. After that, the next-fastest times from around the state are added to reach 32 entries in each event.

King, Samuel, freshman Riddhi Garg and Morlok had qualified on Saturday by winning the 200 freestyle relay. Morlok also had qualified by making the state cut in her second-place finish in the 500 freestyle.

Trinity Lutheran sophomore Rachel Sabotin qualified by winning the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Columbus East’s Maggie Gregory and North’s Ella Anderson will attempt to qualify with top-eight finishes when they compete in Tuesday’s Bloomington North Diving Regional.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.
