VAIL, Colo. — A New Jersey man who went missing while backcountry skiing in Colorado has been found dead.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old Samuel Failla’s body was found east of Vail on Tuesday. His companion called 911 on Monday after falling off a trail and trying to hike to safety for several hours.

He was rescued but did not report until Tuesday morning that he had been in the backcountry with Failla, assuming that he had made it out of the area safely.

The Eagle County coroner’s office has not released Failla’s cause of death or said where in New Jersey he was from.
