LOS ANGELES — Authorities say a man fatally shot by a deputy in Los Angeles got into a sheriff’s patrol car and tried to run another deputy over.

Sheriff’s officials say the shooting happened late Tuesday after deputies received a call of a suspicious man looking inside cars at an East LA apartment complex.

Deputy Trina Schrader says the man tried to hide from deputies and then ran from them as they got out of their patrol car.

Schrader says the suspect managed to jump into the driver’s seat of the car. She says when he sped toward one of the deputies, the other opened fire, striking the man. He died at the scene.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released. No deputies were hurt.
