B. Darlene Barnes, 80, of Offshore Drive, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at Keepsake Village of Columbus, nine years from the day on which her husband died.

Darlene was a devoted wife of 52 years, a loving mother, and a very involved grandmother, taking her grandchildren to many of their school and sporting events, with stops along the way for chicken wraps, Frostys and French fries.

She touched so many lives as she served as a den mother, a teacher’s aide and a volunteer.

She was a founding member of the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church.

Darlene had a great sense of humor and she was always taking care of others. Her generosity to family, friends and neighbors was evident each day, and she would help anyone at any time.

Mrs. Barnes was born March 7, 1937, in Columbus, the daughter of Robert M. and Gertrude (Reed) Weddle.

She married Billy L. Barnes on June 10, 1956.

Survivors include sons, Bradford L. (Pamela) Barnes of Waymansville, and Brian A. Barnes of Columbus who served as her primary caregiver for the last several years; a brother, John R. Weddle of Columbus, Georgia; grandchildren, Jeremy (Kelsi), Zachary and Haley Barnes; a niece, Beth Lowe; and nephews, Bob and John Weddle.

Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister-in-law, Mary Beth Weddle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bartholomew County Humane Society or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Calling hours are 3-5 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
