LUMBERTON, N.C. — Four people have been arrested in the deaths of a man and a woman whose bodies were found in a North Carolina field.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said the four were arrested on Wednesday after deputies executed search warrants at three homes east of Lumberton.

Sheriff Ken Sealey said 31-year-old Patrick Leon Gatlin, 24-year-old Juwon Montael Lewis, 22-year-old Tiffany Leann Smith and 37-year-old Anitriel Ray are charged with two counts each of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and conspiracy. They’re jailed without bond, and it’s not known if they have attorneys.

The charges stem from the deaths of 33-year-old Ashley Nicole Smith and 31-year-old Matthew McRae. Their bodies were found in a field south of Fairmont on Tuesday by someone walking on a road and who saw them lying side-by-side.
