New police officer on first day of training apprehends suspect

COLUMBUS, Indiana — A Ripley County man accused of leading police on a foot chase during a traffic stop was apprehended by a Columbus Police Department officer finishing his first day of training.

Officers Frank Dickman and Reid Thayer attempted to stop a vehicle with a false and fictitious license plate about 2 p.m. Wednesday near Eighth Street and Cottage Avenue, said Lt. Matt Harris, police department spokesman.

The driver — later identified as Shane D. Wilson, 21, of Sunman — forcefully pulled away from an officer a short time later and began fleeing on foot. The officers pursed Wilson, who was apprehended by Thayer in the backyard of a residence in the 700 block of Maple Street.
