MELBOURNE, Fla. — Sheriff’s deputies shot a man following a call for help at a home in Florida.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey told news outlets the incident occurred Thursday afternoon near Melbourne on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

Ivey says the man was using an “edged” weapon to cut his arms when deputies arrived at the home. He says deputies attempted to use a stun gun to stop the man from harming himself, but it was ineffective.

The sheriff says the man then became aggressive and the deputies fired at him.

He was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. An update on his condition wasn’t immediately available.

The two deputies were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the sheriff’s department.
