Plant sale aids pollinator initiative in county

A Sierra Club chapter in Bartholomew County is accepting orders for a plant sale to encourage local residents to establish pollinator-friendly gardens as part of an initiative to increase the populations of pollinating insects and animals.

Three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants, and most fruit, vegetable and seed crops depend on pollinators, such as bees, birds and butterflies, to grow through their pollination efforts, said Julie Lowe, executive committee chair of Winding Waters Group.

Order forms and plant brochures with photos and plant information are available Saturdays at the FairOaks Mall at the winter farmer’s market throughout February. Order forms will be accepted through Feb. 28, and plant pickup is 2 to 6 p.m. May 3 in Building 3 at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds, 750 W. County Road 200S, Columbus.

Order forms also can be obtained by sending an email to Lowe at [email protected], with payment accepted at the farmer’s market. Order forms with payment can also be sent to the Winding Waters Group, care of Doug Johnson, 9285 S. County Road 100W, Columbus, IN 47201. Checks can be made payable to the Sierra Club – WWG.
