FORT MILL, S.C. — A driver has been charged with hitting a South Carolina crossing guard and then fleeing the scene.

The Fort Mill Police Department tells The Herald of Rock Hill that Johnny Clifton IV, 19, of Charlotte, has been charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving minor injury.

Authorities said that the 58-year-old school crossing guard was hit Friday afternoon around 3 p.m. near the entrance to Fort Mill Middle School.

The crossing guard was treated at a hospital and later discharged.

Police spokesman Maj. Bryan Zachary said Saturday that Clifton had been taken into custody. Zachary didn’t immediately respond to a message Sunday asking if Clifton had an attorney who could discuss the case on his behalf.
