Sunrise Rotary painting town with Plein Air Paintout competition

Staff Reports

A Plein Air Paintout is returning to Columbus the weekend of May 12 and 13.

The city, known for its art, Modern architecture, historical buildings, parks and walking trails, will provide numerous opportunities for artists to do outdoor painting, said Priscilla Scalf, president of the sponsoring Columbus Sunrise Rotary Club.

Last year’s “Columbus” movie and Exhibit Columbus event have sparked national interest in Columbus and its art and architecture, she said.

Bob Anderson, who had organized the former Columbus ArtFest, which included a plein air component in 2015 and 2016, is heading up the Rotary event committee with Brigitte Halvorsen.

The Columbus Sunrise Rotary Club plans to make its Plein Air Paintout an annual arts competition, with all plein air painters invited to take part. Deadline for artists to register is April 30.

Here is the weekend event schedule, according to Scalf:

Participating artists check in from 8 a.m. to noon May 11.

Painting commences May 12.

Artists bring in their work from 1 to 2 p.m. May 13, after which judging begins.

The public can view and purchase art work from 3 to 5 p.m. May 13 at the Factory 12 Event Loft, 1235 Jackson St., Columbus.

A dinner and awards ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. May 13.
