GAFFNEY, S.C. — Sheriff’s deputies in South Carolina are investigating after a man died after he was shot during a fight.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said deputies were called around 2 p.m. Sunday about a fight in Gaffney.

Mueller said deputies found about 30 people outside a home. Witnesses said several men and women were fighting when one of the men pulled a gun and fired several shots.

Mary Black Gaffney hospital reported someone with a gunshot wound was brought to the emergency room. The man died before he could be flown to a Spartanburg hospital for treatment.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a news release that the victim was 33-year-old Sherman O. Tate of Gaffney. Fowler said an autopsy was planned Monday.

Sheriff’s deputies are looking for a person of interest.
