WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for beating a woman to death with a baseball bat.

News outlets report 31-year-old Andrew Hoffman pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder, kidnapping and robbery as part of deal to avoid the death penalty.

Authorities say Hoffman and 29-year-old Herbert Savell were doing drugs with 35-year-old Margeaux Greenwald at a Boynton Beach home in June 2014 when the men decided to rob the woman. They tied her up and loaded her into the trunk of her car. Following an escape attempt, the men bought an aluminum T-ball bat at a Target. Police say Hoffman beat the woman to death in a wooded area near a Palm Beach Gardens mall while Savell watched.

Savell was sentenced to 60 years in December for his part in the slaying.
