Coalition helps students with FAFSA application

The Bartholomew Financial Literacy Coalition will help local high school students and their families fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form.

FAFSA days will be conducted:

9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in rooms 1004 A and B at Columbus North High School.

8 a.m. to noon Thursday at Hauser High School in Hope.

9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Columbus East High School library.

BCSC begins kindergarten enrollment for 2018-19

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. will begin kindergarten enrollment for the 2018-19 school year next month.

Enrollment will be from March 5 to 9, with each BCSC elementary school having an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. March 6 to enroll students. Any child who is age 5 by Aug. 1 is eligible for kindergarten.

All parents must bring their child’s birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residency for enrollment. Proof of residency can be a utility bill, but the address must reflect the student’s home address.

Individuals who are not able to attend the evening open house may enroll their child at their home school’s main office during the week of March 5 to 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, parents should contact the school where they plan to enroll their kindergartner.

Nominations accepted for outstanding alumni award

HOPE — Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. is accepting nominations for its outstanding alumni award.

To be eligible, nominees must have graduated at least 10 years ago from Flat Rock-Hawcreek High School. Nomination forms can be obtained by calling the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. office at 812-546-4922 or by emailing Hauser High School Principal David Wintin at [email protected].

Nominations should be submitted to FRHC Outstanding Alumni Award, 9423 N. State Road 9, Hope, IN 47246 and can also be faxed to 812-546-5617. Nominations will also be accepted by emailing Shawn Price, superintendent of the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp., at [email protected].

Nominations are due by March 1 with the award winners being announced at the annual alumni banquet in May. Individuals also will be recognized on the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. website and also will be recognized in the Hauser graduation program booklet.

Essay contest open for fourth-grade students

The Association of Indiana Counties is accepting essays from fourth-grade students as part of a contest focusing on county law enforcement.

The essays should be no longer than one page, and focus county sheriffs, jails, courts, prosecuting attorneys, dispatch and how law enforcement protects their county.

Entries will be judged on how well students discuss the county’s role in local law enforcement.

The name, phone number and email address of a parent/guardian should be provided, along with the teacher’s name and school. To be considered by a judging committee, all entries should be postmarked by March 1.

Entries should be mailed to Molly Smith, Association of Indiana Counties, 101 W. Ohio St., Suite 1575, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Prizes of $100 will be granted to one student in each region of Indiana: Northwest, Northeast, West Central, East Central, Southwest and Southeast, with checks being distributed in late March or early April at the organization’s district meetings.

St. Paul Lutheran Church ministry offers STEM class

St. Paul Lutheran Church early childhood ministry will offer a class focused on science, technology, engineering and math for 4- and 5-year-olds enrolled in its programs this fall.

The STEM class at the church, 6045 E. State St., will be conducted Wednesday afternoons and can be added to the Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4-year-old morning class, its Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 4-year-old afternoon class or the half-day kindergarten program.
