Services and studies

Grace Lutheran — The message at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services is “Honor now, shame later” versus “Shame now, honor later,” a meditation on cross-bearing based on Mark 8:27-38. Sunday school is at 9:25 a.m. at the church at 3201 Central Ave. in Columbus.

The Grace Lutheran ALPHA Class continues with the topic “How Can I Resist Evil?” on Tuesday. A light supper is served at 6 p.m., followed by a video presentation and small-group discussion. The Searching Scripture Class continues with a study of the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed. Child care available.

The midweek sermon series “Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time” continues at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with the topic “Putting the World to Rights: the High Cost of Restoration,” based on Isaiah 53:4 and Mark 1:40-45. A light supper is served at 5:45 p.m. Child care is available.

First Baptist — The Rev. Dan Cash will deliver the message, “Here’s What’s Coming,” with Scripture from Mark 8:31-38, at the 9:30 a.m. service Sunday at the church, 3300 Fairlawn Drive. Child care will be available on the lower level for infants. The service will be streamed live at sundaystreams.com/go/fbccolumbus or fbccolumbus.org/WP/sermons.

The Men of Faith will meet at 6:15 a.m. Friday at Four Seasons Retirement Center, 1901 Taylor Road, for breakfast and Bible study.

St. Paul Lutheran — Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message, “Father Abraham,” during the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday at the church, 6045 E. State St. Scripture will include Genesis 17:1-7 and 15-16.

The theme of Bauman’s sermon for the 6:45 p.m. Wednesday Lenten service will be based on the hard sayings of Jesus. It will be entitled “Love Your Enemies,” as defined in Matthew 5:43-47. A light meal will precede the service and be served from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room for a free-will offering. A hymn sing will immediately follow.

Westside Community — Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the 10 a.m. service Sunday at the church, 124 Tipton Lakes Blvd. The children’s program up through Grade 6 will meet at the same time as the worship service.

A six-week DVD study, “Kingdom of Marriage” by Tony Evans, will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. each Wednesday. Participants will be encouraged to tap into the power of God by seeking his design for marriage.

Old Union United Church of Christ — The message, “Between Me and You,” will be delivered by Pastor Kirby Rupp at the 10 a.m. service Sunday at the church, 12703 N. County Road 50W, Edinburgh. Scripture will include Genesis 17:1-7 and 15-16; Romans 4:13-25; and Mark 8:31-38. Sunday school will convene at 9 a.m. with fellowship to begin at 9:40 a.m.

Bible study will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Maundy Thursday will take place at 6:30 p.m. March 29 at Taylorsville United Methodist Church, 1361 Tannehill Road, Taylorsville. A Good Friday service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

The church will have its Easter sunrise service at 6:45 a.m. April 1.

First United Methodist — At the 9 a.m. Traditional and 11 a.m. Celebration services Sunday at the church, 618 Eighth St., the Rev. Lisa Cottingham will deliver the message, “Living Values: Selflessness.” Scripture will include Mark 8:31-38.

All are invited to the Midweek Service and Brown Bag Lunch beginning at noon Wednesdays during Lent in the chapel.

Petersville United Methodist — Worship service begins at 9 a.m. Sunday at the church, 2781 N. County Road 500E, Petersville. The guest speaker will be Sunday Okello from Uganda. The congregation will be celebrating the annual Faith Promise event that has raised money for global mission projects. Teresa Covert will give the children’s sermon. A time of fellowship will follow the service. At 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will lead a class focused on the season of Lent.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, Baker’s Dozen Bible study will meet at the home of Larry and Connie Nolting, and The Journey Bible study will meet at the home of Chris Kimerling. The Sit ‘N’ Stitch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at the Nolting home.

The Walking Group will meet at 9 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday at FairOaks Mall, 2380 25th St.

The Prayer group will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Barb Hedrick as leader. Choir practice will be held later that evening at 6:30 p.m. under the direction of Kathy Bush.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus — The message, “Reflection of Justice and Peace,” will be delivered during the 10 a.m. service Sunday at the church, 7850 W. Goeller Blvd. Special guest Dan Canon, a civil rights attorney and 9th District congressional candidate from New Albany, will join the congregation to reflect on the collective work of creating justice and peace in the world.

First Presbyterian — Worship will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 512 Seventh St. The sermon will follow Mark 8:31-38 and ask the question, “What does it mean to take up the cross?” Infant and toddler care will be available from 9:15 to 11 a.m.

The men’s and women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Fridays. A second men’s support group meets at 6:15 a.m. every Monday.

People in need of a meal are invited to the Hot Meals program offered at 5 p.m. Friday, with entrance through the doors on Franklin Street.

Music

First Presbyterian — Dale Rogers, former director of music and liturgical arts, and organist, at North Christian Church, will play a concert featuring music by Bach, Mendelssohn, Guilmant, and Jerome Kern on the 47-rank Casavant pipe organ. Rogers has served as director of music and arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Illinois, since 1986. The event begins at 3 p.m. March 11 and will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 512 Seventh St. Admission is free. An offering will be taken.

Events

Burnsville Christian soup supper — A soup supper will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 3 at the church, 2891 S. County Road 900E in Burnsville. Selections will include vegetable, chili, potato, sauerkraut, and oyster, plus hot dogs, desserts and drinks for a donation.

Community Downtown — DivorceCare, a 12-week support group for adults who are separated or divorced, will take place at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at 522 Seventh St. There will be a fee of $15 for the participants guide. Space is limited and registration is required.

First United Methodist — The Learning Tree Preschool Art Show will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 1. The event will showcase the art of each of the preschool’s 170 students. Special pieces will be up for auction. Money raised will go towards purchasing art supplies for the classroom.
