NORTH VERNON — North Vernon police arrested four people on drug-related charges with the help of department K9 Heros after two separate traffic stops.
The first incident happened at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday when Officer Shane Trepanier stopped a 1994 silver Toyota pickup truck for having an obstructed view from the windshield and the passenger threw a cigarette butt from the vehicle on South State Street, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, department spokesman.
Trepanier said the driver and passenger were acting suspiciously and asked for Heros to check the vehicle. The police canine alerted to an odor of an illegal drug inside the vehicle, Richmond said.
A search revealed the female passenger, Deanna Daniel, 27, North Vernon, had a prescription hidden in her purse and had a methamphetamine smoking device, marijuana and methamphetamine hidden in her bra, Richmond said.
The driver gave false identifying information, and was later identified as Ryan Beeman, 34, North Vernon, Richmond said.
Beeman was arrested on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while never being licensed, false identity statement, risk of fleeing for nonsupport of a dependent and a warrant. His bond was set at $2,605, Richmond said.
Daniel was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, Richmond said. Her bond was set at $6,255, jail officials said.
The second incident happened at 3:08 p.m. Tuesday when Officer Wes Thayer stopped a white Dodge vehicle for a fictitious license plate on West O&M Avenue, Richmond said.
Thayer discovered the vehicle did not have current insurance. He asked for Heros to check the vehicle and the dog alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle, Richmond said.
Officers found methamphetamine, marijuana, a methamphetamine smoking pipe, a set of digital scales, multiple small bags and a prescription only pill that was not in a container, Richmond said.
The pill was found in the pocket of the driver, Dustin Lozier, 46, North Vernon, who was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a legend drug, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia, Richmond said. His bond was set at $3,155.
Also arrested was the passenger, Jeremy Lozier, 22, North Vernon, on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a legend drug, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia, Richmond said. His bond was also set at $3,155.
