JESSUP, Md. — Authorities say a Maryland man is accused of forcing an 18-year-old woman to engage in prostitution while taking the profits.

A Howard County police statement says 26-year-old Jabari Theodore was arrested Tuesday at a Laurel hotel and charged with human trafficking, prostitution and concealing a deadly weapon.

Detectives say they learned a woman pictured in an ad on the website Backpage was at the hotel, leading to Theodore’s arrest. Investigators say they believe Theodore coordinated the woman’s appointments where she was forced to perform sex acts for money, which he then took. The woman has been put in contact with specialized counselors.

Theodore was released on bond. Court records didn’t list an attorney for him.

The Baltimore Sun reports there were nine human trafficking arrests in Howard County last year.
