NEW YORK — Officials in New York City say a man searching for building materials fell through the floor of a building set to be demolished.
A city Department of Buildings spokeswoman says the man was scavenging the vacant Brooklyn building Thursday afternoon when the floor gave way. WNBC-TV reports the man plunged into a basement and was buried in debris.
Crews arrived and rescued the man soon after he fell. He was transported to an area hospital where he is expected to survive his injuries.
It’s not clear if the scavenger, who police initially identified as a construction worker, will face charges. The building had 19 open city department violations at the time of the collapse, and was ordered to be demolished earlier this month.
