Ross Eugene Carroll

NORTH VERNON

Mr. Ross Eugene Carroll, age 85, of North Vernon, formerly of Deputy, entered this life on August 30, 1932 in Mitchell.

He was the loving son of the late Edward P. and Helen Guthrie Carroll. He spent his early life in Lawrence County and moved to North Vernon at the age of 14.

He left high school and entered the United States Navy on September 8, 1949 and was inducted in Indianapolis.

He was sent to San Diego, California for his basic training.

He then served on the USS Hector AR-7 Repair Ship and rose to the rate of Seaman. He was stationed in San Francisco aboard the USS Tawasa (ATF-92) a Cherokee -class Fleet Tug. Ross then served in Japan where he helped to recover a Swedish Tanker Avanti which had broken in half.

He then served in Korea in the Seventh Fleet until he was honorably discharged on July 14, 1953 in San Diego, California, receiving the Korean Service Medal with two bronze battle stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

He had previously served for two years in the National Guard at the age of 15.

Ross was first united in marriage to June Condon on January 23, 1954 in Bartholomew County and this union was blessed with daughters Susan and Cathy, and a son, Ty.

Ross worked as an ironworker with the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers from 1965 to 1977, with Local 439, Local 395 and Local 292.

On October 2, 1965 Ross was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Quinn Olmsted in Portage. This union blended two families together with a daughter, Sherry, and a son, Randy.

Ross and Mary returned to North Vernon and he worked heavy construction at the Marble Hill Nuclear Site for several years, and at the disposal unit in North Vernon.

He worked with Phil’s Pool Room, purchasing the business and re-naming it Carroll’s Pool Hall in North Vernon and operated the pool hall for 20 years.

He moved to Deputy in 1998 and resided there until 2002, returning back to North Vernon.

While living in Deputy, he helped his son-in-law and grandson with their farming operation and enjoyed growing a large garden and helping to strip tobacco.

He also enjoyed helping his son Ty with the pumpkin crop from the farm and he would travel around selling at different venues.

Ross was a man that needed to stay busy, so he started working as a driver for Thompson Motors in North Vernon for seven years and Garlitch Chrysler in North Vernon for four years.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mitchell where he was baptized and later attended the Pisgah United Methodist Church in Deputy. He held memberships in the Columbus and Portage American Legion Posts, the North Vernon VFW Post, the St. Peter Masonic Lodge No. 106 F. & A.M. in Edwardsburg, Michigan, and the former Muscatatuck Country Club where he enjoyed golfing.

Ross enjoyed playing golf, gambling, remodeling homes and socializing with his friends.

Ross died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 7:15 a.m. at his home in North Vernon, with his loving wife at his side.

Ross will be missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Elizabeth Quinn Olmsted Carroll of North Vernon; his daughters, Susan K. Flesher and her husband, Don, of Nashville, Indiana, Cathy Bright of Franklin, Indiana, Sherry R. Olmsted Nay and her husband, Richard “Dick” of Deputy; his sons, Ty Carroll of Nashville, Indiana, Randall Marc “Randy” Olmsted and his wife, Amy of Schererville; his grandchildren, Trina L. Miller Asher (Donald), William Ross Bright, Kenny Hammond, Shelly Bright, Rodney Nay, Roger Nay, Markt Nay (Sherry), Lori Shields, and Laura Olmsted; his great-grandchildren, Karlie, Caleb, Hannah, Evan, Nolan, Morgan (Donovan), Kayla, Laura (Josh), Gabby, Isaiah, Mya, Sadie, Little Joe, Michael (Miranda), and Jordan; his great-great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Mason, Emerson and Camden; his brother-in-law, Jimmy Quinn and his wife, Lois of Anderson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward P. Carroll, died July 17, 1983, his mother, Helen Guthrie Carroll Allen, died September 18, 1992; his stepmother, Virginia J. Carroll, died December 2, 1989, his stepfather, Gordon Allen, died February 3, 1987; his granddaughter, Carrie June Miller Hammond, died August 13, 2014, his grandson, M. Chad Olmsted, died January 8, 2018; his son-in-law, William Bright, died March 2, 2011; his sisters, Rosamond Marie Carroll, died 1942 and Willetta May Pollitt.

FUNERAL CEREMONY

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 4, 2018, at 2 p.m., at the Pisgah United Methodist Church on Deputy Pike in Deputy. Interment will follow in the Pisgah Cemetery near Deputy.

VISITATION

Friends may call Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Sawyer Pickett Funeral and Cremation Services, 115 S. State St., North Vernon, and Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the Pisgah United Methodist Church on Deputy Pike in Deputy.

MASONIC SERVICE

A Masonic service will be held on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Sawyer Pickett Funeral and Cremation Services, conducted by the North Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 59 F. & A.M.

MILITARY HONORS

A final salute will be conducted on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Pisgah United Methodist Church with full military honors to follow at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion and the Great Lakes Naval Ceremony Unit.
