Crusaders fall twice on first day of tournament

DAYTON, Tenn. — Conner Emily scored 65 points in two games, but Columbus Christian saw its hopes of defending its NACA Division 5 title dashed with a pair of losses Wednesday.

The Crusaders opened the bracket with a 75-69 overtime loss to Palm Grove Christian from Sarasota, Florida. Emily made the first of two free throws with three seconds left in regulation, but missed the second, and the Crusaders missed a putback that would have won it. Emily finished with 34 points, while C.J. Reed added 11 and Josh Jones had 10.

Columbus Christian led Legacy Christian from Stephens City, Virginia, 31-29 at halftime of its second game, but couldn’t hang on and fell 73-59. Emily scored 31 points, while Kyle Foster added 14 and Reed had 10.

The Crusaders (15-21) will wrap up pool play at 12:30 p.m. today against Arthur-Okaw from Arthur, Illinois. Columbus Christian then will play a placement-round game Friday afternoon.
