Security officer captures fleeing inmate at courthouse

A Bartholomew County Jail inmate who attempted to run from the Child Support courtroom in the county courthouse Monday was captured by a deputy working the courthouse security desk.

Bartholomew County Jail Corrections Officer Tim Claburn was working at the security desk at about 3 p.m. Monday when he saw Fredrick Dabner, 32, Seymour, an inmate who was in the child support courtroom, waving his hands in the air. The courthouse security desk has camera monitoring equipment for each courtroom in the courthouse.

Claburn watched Dabner for several minutes, until about 3:10 p.m. when Dabner leaned out of his chair and attempted to push Correction Officer Mo Holman out of the way in order to run from the courtroom, deputies said. Holman was in the courtroom with three other inmates, deputies said,.

Claburn left the court security desk heading toward the courtroom when Dabner ran past him, deputies said. Claburn used his electronic stun gun device and struck Dabner, advising him to remain on the floor, deputies said.

Indiana State Police Trooper Jacob Tolle went into the courthouse to assist, along with Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Sgt. Grover Crouch.

Dabner was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital to be evaluated before being returned to the jail, deputies said.

Deputies said additional preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement and escape charges against Dabner are being forwarded to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office.
