SAN FRANCISCO — The power to regulate immigration lies primarily with the U.S. government. That was the argument the Obama administration made when it sued Arizona in 2010 over a state law that sought to crackdown on immigrants in the country illegally.
The Trump administration is making the same argument against California in a lawsuit announced Wednesday that seeks to block several state laws aimed at protecting immigrants.
But legal experts say the two states’ laws are fundamentally different. That means the argument that states can’t control immigration may not carry as much weight in the California lawsuit.
