TAMPA BAY, Fla. — Quip won the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby by a length at 19-1 odds.

Ridden by Florent Geroux, Quip ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.72 and paid $40.20, $13.80 and $6.60 on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.

Flameaway returned $6.80 and $4, while World of Trouble was another neck back in third and paid $2.80 to show.

The victory moved Quip into fifth on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 50 points for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. Churchill Downs uses the qualifying system to determine the 20-horse field for the May 5 race.

Only one Tampa Bay Derby winner has gone on to win the Run for the Roses. That was Street Sense in 2007.
